Clowns and Nazis

If there is any wonder why conservatives use the term “Liberal Media”, let me clear it up.  I promise it wont take long.

Washington Post – August 6, 2009 — The new Obama poster has two basic thrusts. Obama is a socialist, or a crypto-socialist. And Obama is somehow like the Joker, unpredictable and dangerous.

[…]

[Referring to the original anonymity of the poster’s designer] So why the anonymity? Perhaps because the poster is ultimately a racially charged image. By using the “urban” makeup of the Heath Ledger Joker, instead of the urbane makeup of the Jack Nicholson character, the poster connects Obama to something many of his detractors fear but can’t openly discuss. He is black and he is identified with the inner city, a source of political instability in the 1960s and ’70s, and a lingering bogeyman in political consciousness despite falling crime rates.

And now from protests of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker

  1. I find it disturbing when someone like the Governor of Wisconsin is equated with Hitler. While I do not agree in any way with much of what has transpired in Wisconsin over the last year, as far as I know Governor Walker has not attempted to wage genocide, has not started a war with Michigan, bombed Ohio or imprisoned thousands in ghetto’s in Milwaukee, nor do I think that he has the potential for doing that.

I am not certain how this points to a “Liberal Media” except that they covered the protests and the overreacting, overreaching nuts with the signs made it on to TV or in to print. I do however agree that there is a “Liberal Lean” to the media in general.

As for the picture of Obama, I find it disturbing that anyone would not be bothered by the poster. It is inane, but as you have said, no one has the right to never be offended.

What I love about this country more than anything else is that every four years we can vote the bum out or keep the bum in as the electorate sees fit. And, while a significant portion of the populace will inevitably be disappointed, in another 4 years we get to do it all over again and have a peaceful transfer of power.

Disturbing is the hyperbole that is coming from both sides of the aisle. The vitriol and bluster. It is paralyzing this country.

    • The bias comes in when an obvious non-racist poster of Obama generates accusations of racism. But posters which obviously paint a Republican Governor as Hitler…literally, there is no condemnation or charges of anti-semitism on the part of the protesters. You have to ask yourself why that is.

Is it a coincidence that MSM outlets ignore liberals protesting conservatives? Or is it an intentional oversight? Much like the tone of the Democrats and media who called for more civility and the scrubbing of “violence toned” language from use by politicians in the wake of Rep. Giffords brutal assault. But who themselves are reverting right back to it. Why is there no coverage of Democrat politicians using “violence toned” language towards conservatives, if but not for a bias (which you already admit)?

    • I will agree, the “Statesman” is an endangered species, and will soon be extinct. There are very few politicians who are diplomatic enough to not bring down the dignity of their office with personal slights.

  2. please show me examples of the violence toned comments from the mainstream democrats.

I do not say they do not exist. I would truely like to see them.

Not sure why there would be charges of anti-Semitism toawrds the nut cases with the Hitler signs or if you mean towards Walker. I don’t think Anti-Semitism is at play here. I think a foolish and ill considered comparison is being made to Hitler abolishing the unions. In any case, comparisons to Hitler should be stomped on by the media, on that I think we can agree.

As far as I can see the “Liberal Media” is counterballanced by the over the top rightwing commentators like the overt bigot Rush Limbaugh.

My point still stands, and I think it is fair to say that we are not that far apart, that there is a lack of civility and productive discourse in the media and in politics.

  3. John, I am truly surprised by you, your Freudian slip is showing.

You do not accept athiests labelling religion as ridiculous and dismissing it wholesale

but you appear to be accepting labelling political things you don’t like with “socialist” and dismissing them as if the label fits and even if it did, as if socialist ideas are uniformly bad

    • Do you think Obama has been labeled a socialist for the mere reason conservatives don’t like him? Or is he labeled because his expressed visions and policies appear to be moulded from socialist ideas?

C’mon now. This is the other double standard. it’s ok to disagree with conservatives, and according to Hillary Clinton, its patriotic. But to criticize this President, its racist or its just because we dont like him. Does it really seem impossible to disagree with his policies because we view them as bad policy? Or can it only be because of hate?

      • John_on_a _break's avatar John_on_a _break says:

Why is this an issue ? Obviously when you paint a black man as white there will be racial connotations. And that is simply because of the racist history of the country.I am referring to the pre-civil rights movement era.So there is a sensitivity to these matters as opposed to Hitler which everyone knows is a common device for parody.US has no nazi skeletons in its closet. The degree of offense is different.

Is this so hard to comprehend barron? Jeez you’re slipping.

        • Clown makeup is usually white and has no racial undertones. The message is inherently a comparison with “the joker” and not with a white man.

However, jews everywhere have every right to take offense with nazi imagery of US government officials.

You know if it was tea party groups holding up nazi signs comparing a democrat to hitler it would be all over the news and liberal talk shows attempting to re-enforce the notion that the tea party is racist.

      • so, when other people label something as thus and so – you challenge them to prove it

but when you label people and are asked to prove it, your response is c’mon, it’s true.

that’s the interesting double standard that I am seeing.

and no, I don’t think Obama counts as a socialist in any meaningful way – the US has decades to catch up to Canada’s mild socialism – so labeling something in it’s historic and European context as if it ports to North America, isn’t very accurate.

Although, he is the most Canadian of your presidents ever – he’s no Tommy Douglas – who got universal health care in Canada.

Any Thoughts?
