What is “Equality”?

Last week social media was thick with this and similar images.  The icon, which is a recoloring of the HRC’s ordinary blue field and yellow lines, was donned to show support for “marriage equality”.

I’m sure I’ve asked this before, but what is marriage equality?  What needs to be the case in order for there to be equality in the marriage issue, what factor(s) are of concern and need to be addressed?

I have always understood equality to mean to every person the same standards are applied.  The same rights and the same restrictions.  What am I missing?  What more needs to be considered?  Does equality mean everyone should have the right to have what they want?

  1. Today, equality means that things that are clearly different can be called the same and thus are equal.

Any Thoughts?
